Corona Pretreatment

What does corona mean?

The term corona pretreatment is generally used to describe a high-voltage discharge between an electrode and a counter electrode. The electrical discharge causes the air in the electrode gap to ionize. When the film or flat component is passed under the nozzle, the reactive species created by the discharge interact with the polymer surface and activate it. As with plasma activation, oxygenated groups are bonded to the outer-most molecular layer, where they cause the polar fraction of the surface energy to increase.

  • Direct corona - discharge between electrode and grounded counter electrode; the item being treated is passed through the gap.
  • Indirect corona - discharge between two ceramic electrodes; a laminar air current directs the resulting "current filaments" onto the surface to be treated.
